Witness guide
Seen something unusual? Start with what you can record.
Start with the basics: where you were, the date, the local time and the direction you were facing. Describe what caught your attention in plain language. Keep what you saw separate from what you think it might have been.
Note how long the object was visible, whether it appeared to move, and what you could hear. If you are unsure about its size, distance or speed, say so. An honest uncertainty is more useful than a precise-looking estimate without a reliable reference.
If you recorded an image or video, keep the original file. Make a separate copy for cropping or highlighting. Record the device used and any zoom or editing, and ask other witnesses to write their own accounts while the details are fresh.
Only observe from a safe place. You do not need to approach an object or enter private property to make a valuable report. Submit your sighting
